Engineering Degrees in Canada

In Canada, an engineering degree is achieved by attaining scientific, economic, social and practical knowledge through an accredited four year program of study. An engineering program of study is accredited by the local authority in the province or territory the program is located in. This knowledge is applied to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes, but can also be applied in other countries according to the accrediting auspices of other locales.The Bachelor of Applied Science, or Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree is awarded to graduates of Canadian universities as well as the degrees for specific studies of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

A student needs to invest 4 to 5 years of study to obtain a degree in engineering. Engineering disciplines include:

Academic qualifications for engineers in Canadian colleges and universities have been established by the Engineers Canada since 1965. The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board establishes the process for accrediting an engineering program. The criteria set by EC and CEAB and taught at the authorized institutions enable students to pursue and earn a degree in Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science. After graduation, the graduate may register as a professional engineer, known as P.Eng., through a licensing body in the province or territory where you want to work.

After the attainment of a Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science, the engineering graduate in Canada must register as an engineer-in-training or member-in-training with an engineering licensing body in the province or territory where they plan on working. Registration with the licensing body in a territory or province of Canada, allows the work experience of the engineering graduate to accrue as the experience requirement for licensure. A candidate for P.Eng. must have four progressive years of engineering work experience. One of the four years must be performed strictly in Canada.

Becoming a P.Eng (Professional Engineer)

The purpose of the self-governing body of professional engineers in the territory and provinces of Canada is to regulate and license engineers in order to protect the public. When an engineering graduate applies for and is granted the title P.Eng., the Professional Engineers are bound by the provincial Code of Ethics which states they must not practise beyond their training and experience. The registration process is:

1. Earn a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science engineering degree at an institution accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.
2. After graduation, participate in an engineering internship under the auspice of a registered P.Eng.
3. Create a review of work experience by the Engineering Association of a Canadian territory or province.
4. Successfully pass the Professional Practice Exam.
